A survey of dairy calf management practices in some producing regions in Brazil R. Bras. Zootec.
Santos,Glauber dos; Bittar,Carla Maris Machado.
ABSTRACTThis study aimed to characterize the Brazilian dairy calves raising systems through a survey of major aspects of animal husbandry. One hundred seventy-nine producers and/or technicians were interviewed. The questionnaire addressed issues related to the management of the dry cow and the newborn, nutritional management of the liquid-feeding phase, housing, and health management. A third of newborn calves stay with their mothers for more than 24 h after delivery, and only 56% of the calves receive colostrum within the first 8 h of life. Four out of ten producers allow the calf to suckle colostrum directly from the mother. Regarding the liquid diet, 44 and 35% of the farms provide marketable milk and discard milk for the calves, respectively. It was...

Changes in the plasma levels of several bone markers in newborn calves during the first two days of life OAK
HATATE, Kaoru; SHINYA, Kazuhiko; MATSUO-SATO, Asako; SASAKI, Shuichi; DEVKOTA, Bhuminand; TAKAHASHI, Masahiro; HIRATA, Toichi; YAMAGISHI, Norio; 山岸, 則夫.
The fluctuations in the plasma levels of several bone markers were investigated in newborn calves. Experiment 1 monitored the postnatal changes in the plasma levels of tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase isoform 5b (TRAP5b), total alkaline phosphatase (t-ALP) and bone-specific alkaline phosphatase (BAP) in four calves. These markers increased significantly from 9−20 hr after the first colostrum-suckling compared with the values immediately after birth. Experiment 2 evaluated changes in the plasma TRAP5b, t-ALP, BAP and type I collagen cross-linked N-telopeptide (NTx) levels within 2 days post-birth in five calves with successful passive immunization via colostrum (non-deficient group) and five others with poor colostrum intake (deficient group). The...

Chemical characterization of the oligosaccharides in Bactrian camel (Camelus bactrianus) milk and colostrum OAK
Fukuda, K.; Yamamoto, A.; Ganzorig, K.; Senda, A.; Saito, T.; Urashima, T.; 福田, 健二; 浦島, 匡; Khuukhenbaatar, J..
Bactrian camel milk and colostrum are commonly used as foods in Mongolia, whose people believe that these products promote human health. It has been hypothesized that milk oligosaccharides are biologically significant components of human milk, acting as receptor analogs that inhibit the attachment of pathogenic microorganisms to the colonic mucosa, and as prebiotics, which stimulate the growth of bifidobacteria within the infant colon. To evaluate their biological significance, we studied the oligosaccharides present in samples of Bactrian camel milk and colostrum. Using 1H-nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, we identified and characterized the following oligosaccharides of camel colostrum: Gal(β1–4)[Fuc(α1–3)]Glc (3-fucosyllactose),...

Colostral immunoglobulins absorption in Canchim and Nelore calves R. Bras. Zootec.
Machado Neto,Raul; Packer,Irineu Umberto; Prado,Gladys Villas Boas do; Bessi,Rosana; Pauletti,Patricia.
The efficiency of absorption of colostral immunoglobulins was evaluated in five Canchim and seven Nelore calves. They received colostrum pools with concentration of 70.20 ± 6.14 mg/mL through esofageal feeder at 2, 12, 24 and 36 hours after birth. The immunoglobulins concentrations of the pools were estimated through specific gravity and measured by radial immunodifusion. In the blood collection at birth and during the first 70 days of life, the total protein was assayed by biuret method and the immunoglobulins were assayed by radial immunodifusion. Data were analysed as a randomized split-plot statistical model. The highest concentrations of serum immunoglobulins and total protein were observed at 24 hours of age. No significant differences (P>0.5484)...

DAIRY HERD MANAGEMENT PRACTICES FOCUSING ON PREWEANED HEIFERS AgEcon
Ott, Stephen L..
The National Dairy Heifer Evaluation Project ( NDHEP ) was conducted by the National Animal Health Monitoring System (NAHMS ) from April 1991 through July 1992 with the assistance of 1,811 producers from 28 states. Producers included in the study each had herds of 30 or more milk cows, representing 78 percent of the milk cows in the U.S. The average total of cattle and calves on each operation was 169.4. The main breed on 94.9% of operations was Holstein. Slightly over 46 percent of operations stated reproductive problems as the cause of low milk production of cows culled from the herd. Newborn calves were separated from their mothers before nursing on 28.0 percent of operations and less than 12 hours after birth on 39.6 percent of operations. On 64.0...

Determination of Prostaglandins in the Colostrum of Dairy Cattle by Thermospray High-Performance Liquid Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry. OAK
FUKUSHIMA, Michihiro; NAKANO, Masuo; ENDO, Tsuyoshi; NEGISHI, Takashi; 福島, 道広.
A thermospray high-performance liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (TSP HPLC-MS) method is described for the analysis of prostaglandins (PGs) E1 and E2, which have several physiological actions at the trace level. HPLC separation was carried out on a reversed-phase column by using 50mM ammonium acetate (pH 4.5)-acetonitrile (7:3, v/v) as the mobile phase at a flow rate of 1.0ml/min. In MS detection, the vaporizer temperature was set at 220°C and the ion-source block temperature at 264°C. The mass spectra obtained from PGs typically exhibited the [M+NH4]+ ion (5 to 30% relative intensity) and several fragment ions due to sequential losses of water from both the [M+H]+ and [M+NH4]+ ions. PGE1 (46.9ppb) and PGE2 (1.9ppb) in the colostrum of dairy cattle...

Effect of feeding heat-treated and unheated colostrum on immunoglobulin G absorption, health and performance of neonatal Holstein dairy calves Animal Sciences
Rafiei, Mohammad; Ghoorchi, Taghi; Toghdory, Abdolhakim; Moazeni, Mostafa; Khalili, Mohsen.
First colostrum is an important source of nutrients and immune factors which are necessary for calves in the first weeks of life. Despite these benefits, colostrum can also represent one of the earliest potential exposures of dairy calves to infectious agents which these patogens can act directly on growth and cause diseases such as scours or septicemia. With recent increased interest in pasteurized milk feeding systems, producers have been curious to learn if there may also be benefits from feeding pasteurized colostrum. This study was realized to determine the effects of feeding heat-treated colostrum or unheated colostrum on passive transfer of immunity, immunoglobulin G (IgG) concentration, total plate count, health and performance of neonatal dairy...

Neonatology in calves: the importance of colostrum MV&Z
Guerra, Guilherme Alves; Dorneles, Elaine Maria Seles; Souza, Fernando Nogueira; Cortez, Adriana; Batista, Camila Freitas; Coelho, Sandra Gesteira; Lage, Andrey Pereira; Della Libera, Alice Maria Melville Paiva; Heinemann, Marcos Bryan.
Neonates are able to respond to infectious agents by their innate and acquired immune responses, however, they are slow, produced in small-scale and have low antibody concentrations. Thus, maternal immunity transference is critical to calf initial survival, since it provides antibodies to the neonate bovine, cells of the immune system, as well as other essential elements to its survival, as nutrients, components of the complement system, growth factors, hormones, cytokines, oligosaccharides, gangliosides, reactive oxygen molecules, acute phase proteins, immunomodulatory factors, enzymes, ribonucleases, nucleotides, polyamines, peptides and proteins with antimicrobial activity, antioxidants and trypsin inhibitors. This review presents a discussion of...

Quality of colostral passive immunity and pattern of serum protein fluctuation in newborn calves Scientia Agricola
Pauletti,Patricia; Machado Neto,Raul; Packer,Irineu Umberto; D'Arce,Raul Dantas; Bessi,Rosana.
Immunity acquired by newborn animals is known as passive immunity, and for ruminants, antibody acquisition depends on the ingestion and absorption of adequate amounts of immunoglobulins from colostrum. This study relates different initial levels of acquired passive protection and serum total protein (TP) and immunoglobulin G (IgG). Serum immunoglobulin concentration and total protein were evaluated for female Holstein calves in the first sixty days of life. Animals were separated into three groups according to their initial level of passive immunity: group 1- animals with a low level of passive immunity (below 20 mg mL-1); group 2- animals with a medium level (between 20 and 30 mg mL-1), and group 3- animals with a high level (above 30 mg mL-1). Serum...

Short communication : Evidence for the presence of a putative odorant-binding protein in bovine colostrum OAK
Fukuda, K; Senda, A; Ishii, T; Urashima, T; Morita, M; Terabayashi, T; 福田, 健二; 浦島, 匡.
Using a combination of PAGE and mass spectrom etry for protein identification,we obtained evidence that a putative odorant-binding protein, designated hypothetical protein LOC517854,occurs in bovine colostrum. This protein, termed as a putative bovine colostral odorant-binding protein (bcOBP), consists of 172 AA residues, including a putative 16-AA signal peptide. The theoreticalis oelectric point value and molecular mass of the full-length sequence of bcOBP were calculated to be 4.57 and 19604.18,respectively. The highest sequence similarity (83%) was observed with a potential pheromone transporter,Allergen Bos d 2. An odorant-binding protein derived from bovine nasal mucosa showed relatively low sequence similarity(52%) against bcOBP. Its biological...
